got 3 different batches... meaning produced in different seasons...






 three pouches inside each pack...





 opening up smells a bit sour...
6pcs in 1st bag...




 one got a bit of hairy skin on...






 got yellow n burnt marks...







 first piece quite mushy...
taste strange a bit medicine like...







 second piece with much rot on surface...
looks similar inside...
n taste strange too... 











every piece looks similar inside
juz that the taste is super unnatural...



















from the third batch... each pouch 8~9 pcs..
was wet but smells fine...








taste fine also...
juz not that firm chestnuts but less soft than the two previous batch...
even these two flat ones are not firm enough
coz experience tells flat ones are more firm...









bite open the flat piece looks not that brown n burnt...








got a piece (on the right) so dark and wrinkled...
the left two is for colour comparison...
wonder if it's old or over roasted?

rather firm n starchy
also taste a bit burnt n bitter...








got a piece that is super mushy...
juz didn have it...








got a piece with some funny scars on...

opening outer package are two/ four square pouches...
depending on the size of package u got...










opening up the pouch
totally dry n no wet n damp... good thing...
never a hint of acidic or sour as well...








each with around 13~15 pcs..
they all look quite intact...








soak them in water to let the black impurities out...








#1 piece
1st piece start with a black shell piece...







the kernel looks fine at the split...








but then split open got some signs of rot...








the flesh inside is fine... juz that it stuck much to the shell...

2nd piece looks real black n burnt...







but do have some good flesh... with good n moist texture...

n the flesh stuck hard to the shell...

got two kinds of packaging sold with same product name...
one is a 100g pouch...
one is 60g *4 pouches in a big pack...
they are of different production date...
thus seasonal variation maybe obvious...








100g pouches...
opening smells real flavourful...
very chestnut-like...









sizes are not any bigger than other two product...
but are less wet n with less yellow substance...










1st bag got 14 pcs...









biting into one loos not much different...
same brown n yellow colour flesh...









a rounder piece on left and a flat piece on right...









a piece got yellow substance on surface...








think each piece is firmer...
more starchy n chewy... got a bit 糯米 feel...
that was a better mouthfeel for this product...











2nd bag looks similar...
smells flavourful as well... got 15 pcs in this bag...











a yellow substance piece...
yet it's the only one in this bag...










another flat and round combo... lol...










got a piece that's a bit square-like...
looks like a parcel lol...











two pieces that are unevenly burnt...










3rd bag looks wetter... smells a bit metallic...










a broken piece in this bag...
it's more soft n mushy... likely overcooked...










a piece with a big rot seen on surface...











removing the rotten area is fine for the rest of the flesh...











4th bag...

5th bag...
got more overcooked yellow-brown pieces...
they taste more mushy...
btw the right most piece is for colour comparison...

inside the pouch is much wetter...

sizes seems larger...
but with rot pieces n yellow substances pieces...










likely a rot piece with some flesh trimmed away during production...
bite into turns out much flesh is infected...










also got a half-cut piece of rot flesh...










almost all pieces are either rot or burnt...
taste mushy...









try to bite away the rot part... looks reddish brown on rot part...

split up looks strange at the centre...
though taste of flesh is ok...











got a piece that shaped like pumpkin...
it tastes fine but a bit too mushy...














4th pouch...
it's got super messy mushy inside...
juz wonder if that's pre-packaging or post packaging issue...










a very large piece that looks the best...
yet still mushy overcooked...










got a piece that rot without any sign on the surface...
only know it when biting into feel hard...









*overall think quality is fluctuated
*it's all abt seasonality

the 甘栗 & 板栗 is juz a product name difference...
not much significant differences on quality...
thinking it's all about seasonality...

in the case of 板栗, some are starchy n firm with a good mouthfeel... while some are wet n mushy n also rot...
though 板栗 should be a more chewy starchy variety...
it's either producers are cheating or its juz seasonality thing...

in the case of 甘栗, same that some are rot while some are good n firm...
given that 甘栗 is said to be a more delicate variety...
those 甘栗,連殼 chestnuts in shell tend to have a larger n starchier kernels...


overall, do think that the seasonality is the main reason for the differences...
the name of the packaging doesnt say a lot on the quality...
both two products sold under two different chestnut varieties maybe very fluctuated in quality...

yet I'd prefer the chestnuts in shell... which are so far better in texture n taste... even though some would be rot, at least they will not be wet n mushy...
also the kernels are more intact n look larger...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- galia melon @20190404 three melons all got rotten spots...  sign of rot on the stem end...  and at the bottom... the blackened part has become soft and spongy...  opening look... out of my expectation... thought galia melon is with green flesh, as suggested on the web...   seeds removed... no rotting inside the flesh... that was not juicy when cut...   the seeds inside are sweet... but are scary to me coz my mouth would react badly, burning n bleeding... some kind of melon allergy...  spongy flesh towards the one end...  next the second melon...   the second one is paler... and the bottom end got serious moldy rot...  the spongy flesh towards one end...  cut out showing how deep it was infected... some of the flesh become translucent... n that rotting smell is obvious...  the rotten sp...
