  潺菜  meal pics @20240622 & @20240624 (encore) ============================ @20240622 this is a first try of 潺菜 from Wikipedia:  Basella alba  is known by  common names  including  Malabar spinach ,  vine spinach ,  Ceylon spinach  and  Indian spinach got the word "spinach" in its English name  yet from web info.. it's not closely related to spinach.. likely juz that it looks like spinach  as for the Chinese name it's called 潺菜 coz its slimy slippery texture also got other names such as 木耳菜 皇宮菜 a kind of green veg that's said to be in season in summer prep two packs.. as quite much unfresh leaves not so slimy when washing a bit slimy only when there're cuts at leaves or stems after cooking  juz soft n tender.. looks like spinach though hv cooked for too long.. lost its green colour it's still tasting OK taste n texture juz like most other soft stem greens the flavour might be a bit like spinach.. n yet w/o that sq...

  thai durian  meal pics @2024 May ========================= all durian are by Tropical Premium  (the supplier) ========================= 20240515 20240516 20240517 *got two varieties  *the new one to try called 金掌 (translated as golden palm)  *金掌 though out of shell.. no significant watery.. n the texture is gd creamy.. juz that the size of pods is small n thus little flesh this one sold as monthong.. looks plump n fresh.. but not fully ripe.. flesh not creamy but still a bit crunchy  20240518 *the new variety to try called 靈猴 (on label translated as baby monthong)  *the regular monthong ok fresh.. no watery.. yet not perfect ripe *meanwhile 靈猴 which looks golden yellow on the shell.. is wif gd ripe creamy flesh.. juz that the size of pods is small

  菱角  @20231004 first try this black shell veg  this is a mid autumn festive food  but I've never tried it before  ... prepared 3 bags of them  though no so fresh some are getting moldy  also.. one of the bags containing stones ...  juz boiled them like other starch veg cooked ones look indifferent from the raw ones the shell no change colour  n no softened  ...  juz super hard to break open the shell  first half.. I used bare hands  break them up into half  but then it's still difficult to peel away the shell the flesh is stuck inside  thus gotta use chopsticks to pick it out ...  second half  use kitchen scissors.. as my hands got tired  btw.. some are too small to grab onto n break ...  below is one of them  which is rotten n getting slimy n thus can remove the shell juz by pulling apart ...  many of them are undercooked  the flesh is showing a two-tone white n bite into it's...

  custard apple  @20211026 (14 pics) juz a chance  this month meet custard apples at grocer so tempting that decided to get some n to change meal plan.. though only got 2 pcs ... these custard apples sold as from Thailand  when picked, was rock hard but already wif black oxidized n wrinkled skin it's really hard to judge its ripeness  coz by touch feel hard unripe  n yet by outlook it's already wilting old ...  unexpectedly  juz after 2 days  has gone rot n moldy was thinking would need more days to ripe n as they were rock hard meanwhile  smelling gd sweet as experienced ...  though rot n no fresh  n no enough of them for one meal still decided to hv a taste of them  as they're juz so tempting  n especially its signature sweet aroma got only 2 to enjoy no satisfying.. craving for more n more regret didn't pick more while stock lasts...
