chestnuts are one of my fav...
juz love starchy veg...
also love the subtle nutty sweetness of chestnuts...
this time gonna do a taste test of two brands of instant chestnuts...
one is by four seas, 四洲...
while one is by kashi honpo, 菓子本舖...
both two brands are product of china...

chestnut (instant / ready to eat)
即食甘栗
by four seas 四洲
VS
chestnut (instant / ready to eat)
即食甘栗
by kashi honpo 菓子本舖
first open up the four seas chestnuts...
not my first time tasting this brand... n it's been a quite good experience...
this time gonna record it...
some got green n yellow substances on surface...
while some can be yellow... like it's not been roasted...
though its said to be normal phenomenon for them to yellow substance on, it doesnt look good...
happens that splitting open the yellow mouldy-look piece it looks rot...
bite into a piece showing the flesh colour... it's yellow white...
right in the centre is the same brown roasted colour...
got that sprouting point visible...
some got a flat side while some are round...
a piece split into three parts showing colour difference at different part....
most got a knife mark on one side...
some are unevenly roasted n got a two-tone surface... with some spots more burnt...
flat surface pieces are more easily to find the knife mark...
a piece that looks like a brain...
should be somehow rotten or unfresh...
then bite into half looks like got some mouldy yellow substance...
yet it tastes fine...
the 2nd bag got some really roasted burnt pieces...
also notice one with a black spot...
12pcs in 2nd bag...
a piece on the right got yellow substance on top...
a piece got a concave side... lol
a piece with both sides flat...
thinking therefore it's easily to be roasted that deep brown...
a piece roasted so hard that it's very burnt even into the centre...
it tastes burnt n hard...
the largest vs the smallest with this bag...
the largest one got some yellow thing on...
this largest one bite into half
turns out that it's not throughly cooked
with inner part still dry n starchy...
a piece with uneven burnt surface looks ugly...
also the knife mark is deep...
another buurnt n dark black piece...
less burnt piece will taste sweeter...
n feel more tender as well...
love those less burnt pieces...
not only will they be sweeter, but also easier spot defects...
the concave one juz totally fine inside...
#3 bag...
got a piece rot at the sprout point...
the least burnt piece in this bag already...
still with half quite brown though...
#4 bag (10pcs)
got a quite yellow umfresh one... juz trash it...
the less burnt piece but are dry n uncooked through...
#5 bag
a piece with rot or human-made holes?
it turns out taste burnt n bitter...
a piece being cut ... likely very rot n got noticed by worker...
it tastes not sweet...
one that looks n tastes very burnt... bite into half showing how burnt it is...
#6 bag
really rot a piece that has already trimmed away several cuts...
the rot one wanna trash it but eaten half
coz bite open taste quite good...
got a piece with black dots ..
wonder if these are burnt or rot marks...
#7 bag (11 pcs)
a flat one with two-tone on one side
n deep cut mark on the other side...
least burnt one with all defects clearly seen...
second tasting chestnuts from kashi honpo...
never tried this brand... the packaging looks promising to me...
#1 bag
looks very wet inside... like a bit syrupy...
much yellow substance on chestnuts...
n they are generally smaller in size...
mushy n taste strangely sweet...
three small pieces all with yellow substance on...
#2 bag
same wet inside but with larger kernels...
a rot piece that has been trimmed off ...
two pieces with much yellow on...
sign of overcooked...
flesh mostly turns brown...
this piece juz too soft n mushy...
a firmer piece finally...
the largest piece in this bag...
is the driest one... less mushy... mildly sweet...
already the best one for this brand...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
chestnut (instant / ready to eat)
即食甘栗
result...
think four seas chestnuts are way better than those of kashi honpo...
both in terms of flavour n in terms of texture...
kashi honpo are bad
juz mushy wet n overcooked
most pieces are broken n not intact...
juz love starchy veg...
also love the subtle nutty sweetness of chestnuts...
this time gonna do a taste test of two brands of instant chestnuts...
