salak / snake fruit

this is the first time I came that close to this tropical exotic fruit...
frankly it does smell a bit like sweaty feet...
n it looks unfriendly with that little spikes on the skin...

somehow it's got a similar stinky smell as jackfruits... but this one is more intense...
juz feel that jackfruit still got a little bit of sweet tone...

thinking that it's a rare chance to meet it... so decided to have an experiment with it...

before getting my hands on it, I googled a bit...
likely mine looks slimmer than others...
yet skin colour is similar

predictable that it would have a sweet n sour taste...
the texture might be juicy might be dry... its said that different varieties may be very different...

experiment time...

yep... the spikes are a bit scary n offensive to me

some are bigger n some are real tiny
some with round body some with flat angled side

start with the one with a hole
its actually easy to tear
removing the skin reveals two cloves of flesh
while peeling no juice coming out
looks drier than bananas

pressing it realize it's like orange pulps
got a membrane
surrounding are some juicy succulent flesh

it's not that smelly after opening
likely taste sweet n sour like most tropical fruits
flavour be more intense towards the inside

but the truth is it tastes a bit like 天拿水
juz not friendly the smell

texture so how like plums
or think of a melon flesh that has soften
coz it's with that feel of grainy

second try the smallest one...
it's with longer spikes
n that hurts my finger a bit
harder to open coz the smaller size n the stronger spikes
this one makes me think of longan that is drier

third a larger one
with two cloves
but with rot come from nowhere
juz try to have a second bite into a larger clove
but it's the same unfriendly taste
this time I think of how to describe
it's like swallowing a bubblegum
that really taste like that soda flavored
