mangosteen

it's my first time trying mangosteen
done some research to learn abt  these little bomb-like fruit.
they are so called “the queen of fruit”, while “the king of fruit” being durian.
they are one of those tropical fruits.
n got a sweet n sour taste like most other tropical fruits.

learnt from some web info that it is ripe when the colour of the skin turns deep purple...
n that it will be soft when given a press on skin...

also gotta learn how to open it...
found that most ppl use a knife... while some will open it with bare hands...
it will be kinda like how one open a citrus fruit - juz to pinch n tear...

btw the no. of “pedals” on the bottom indicates the no. of cloves inside... more cloves may mean smaller seeds or even no seeds...

first try mangosteen!
n these are from Thailand...

some of them blackened n hard are unfresh
some are still with green stem
funny they have got something like bird poop on skin lol

1st...
first open up a hard one
it's still green on stem n leaves part
but are rock hard already
the flower on the bottom tells it's got six cloves
excited to found out if true
gotta use a knife for this rock hard piece
opening up looks mouldy
smells really rot
still try to have those seemingly white n alright clove
but its sour and irritating
gotta trash it

2nd...
 another hard one
less hard, with points yield some pinching
green stem as well
should be with seven cloves this one
opening looks like only the hard side is bad
n its seven white cloves in this
one bite finds out its translucent in one clove
still have it coz taste sweet n juicy still

3rd...
the third one I'm able to open it by pinching
though still got some hard parts
this one the no. of cloves is kinda hard to tell
the shape of the flower is blurred
turns out it's a good one
yum yum yum sweet n juicy
also the cloves are translucent but taste fine
should be alright
and the inner side of the shell should be bright red

4th...
try the other method of pinch from the stem side...
first pick the stem away
then pinch it open
good to do this coz its convenient
but juice may be lost if pinch too hard

5th
a pink rind reveal when pick away the stem
a fresh n juicy one

6th...
with a big clove that got a large seed
but I somehow eat up most of the seed lol
coz its juz soft enough

the bird pop thing will not only appear on the skin
but also on the stem n on the flesh...

with six cloves n with a large seed... the flesh stick to the seed hard to eat it clean

think the five pedals flower looks the most beautiful... btw it's a snow white perfect one...

five cloves got two big seed

some more photos of the other pieces...

rotten one will have totally gooey flesh

got one with yellow substance on the flesh... wonder what this is...

another one with much yellow substance on the inside

a rot one with yellow substance inside

learns that yellow substance on the skin may mean rotting yellow goes inside

the yellow substance may go into the centre

yellow substance appears even no sign on the outside...

five cloves but with three large seeds... so many of them...

seven pedals flower is already a rare one... most are with six cloves n a large seed...

however this seven clove one grows yellow thing inside...

yellow thing sticks on both the skin n the flesh

(following 3pics)seven cloves but with wilted stem... open up half rotten...

a five pedal n small sized one got no large seed inside...

a beautifully white n fresh six clove piece

a six clove with a thin rind... so more flesh is edible...

(following 3pics) two pieces with yellow substance on skin... maybe that means serious rot? turns out five pedal one are ok n also thin rind... n the six pedal one only a little yellow thing on bottom... n a thin rind as well...

(following 2pics) five pedals but with thin rind... though got two large seeds...

lastly try two larger pieces from the last box...
they are more brighter red instead of purple...
dunno if that's ripe so wanna try n see...
one is with four pedals n one with five pedals...
both green stems...
five pedal one with yellow n rot already... also two large seeds...
four pedal one taste ok as well... n strange that it's got empty seed wtf...

having these mamgosteens is a love n hate...
the sweet n sour flesh is enjoyable...
however preparing them is a bulky fruit haul...
but only to got a mouthful of white flesh edible in each...
after eating them will be messy...
the rinds n the pigments left on countertop...
n also the oxidized browning left on hands n mouth are hard to remove...
juz dun think they are worthy to have again...
... afterall so much other fleshy n tasty fruits are there n they will be less messy...

melon (galia melon)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- galia melon @20190404 three melons all got rotten spots...  sign of rot on the stem end...  and at the bottom... the blackened part has become soft and spongy...  opening look... out of my expectation... thought galia melon is with green flesh, as suggested on the web...   seeds removed... no rotting inside the flesh... that was not juicy when cut...   the seeds inside are sweet... but are scary to me coz my mouth would react badly, burning n bleeding... some kind of melon allergy...  spongy flesh towards the one end...  next the second melon...   the second one is paler... and the bottom end got serious moldy rot...  the spongy flesh towards one end...  cut out showing how deep it was infected... some of the flesh become translucent... n that rotting smell is obvious...  the rotten sp...
