dragon fruit is not a new thing to me...
it's rather easy to find in hk so I have eaten them b4 ...
however red dragon fruits are some rare thing these years... n that I ve never tried...
learned from the web that it's sweeter than the white ones... makes me looking forward to try some...
now got a chance so decided to do a taste test...
got some red dragon fruits from Malaysia n some from taiwan... n let's have a battle, shall we?
here is my taste test record...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
red dragon fruit
Malaysia
@2019 apr15
1st...
not so special compared with white ones
2nd
3rd
4th
got a spike that hurt me!!!
though a firmer one
seems to be sweeter than the others
still the centre is the sweetest
5th
shriveled
yellow seems to be ripe sign
browning at the bottom
will it be sour?
a thin skin one
turns out white thing appears
so maybe green bottom means still not gooey inside
likely a worm hole but I never notice on the outside
ok sweet so far
6th
last one
with intact stem and green bottom
maybe a firmer one

red dragon fruit
Taiwan
@2019 apr16
a close up of four mouldy ones
juz easily got mouldy though I didn't wrap them tight
already leave air for them to breathe...
three more pieces without mold and with greener bottom
the one on top is the largest one
the two others are with thick skin
1st
mouldy n becomes slimy
hard to peel
but flesh looks intact
taste fine as well
juz not a super deep purple red one
though colour is hard to capture
there is a part got rotten thru the skin into the flesh
2nd
the other quite slimy rot one on one side
also got brown rust colored bottom
also a rounder n smoother skin one
the mouldy skin didn't affect the flesh in this one
again not a deep purple red one
n this one got a bit sour at some parts
likely the rustic bottom is a factor?
the sweetest part right at the centre with the seeds most concentrated
the sweetest part would be as sweet as grapes
3rd
the slimy end after a wash reveals the browning too
mould on the side of skin doesn't affect the flesh
however the moldy end did penetrate a bit deep...
though the browning at bottom is present, this one without a hint of sourness
4th
the one with thick skin
and some black spot on skin
likely a diseased fruit...
a little brown rust at bottom
strange that the cut does not affect the flesh but a part that looks totally fine are bruised into the flesh...
very likely a diseased fruit with those brown tissues on surface
and the whitening appears on all sides
juz bite away the part and eat it... it's super juicy and quite sweet ... n the colour is purple red...
5th
another thick skin one with some disease sign of
also a green bottom this is a large area bottom
again with white marks on surface
again a purple red one but it's not as sweet as the other one
6th
likely the largest one
with green pedals on skin
and a bit disease marks
this one with no brown mark on surface
a juicy and deep purple one but taste a bit sour
7th
last one n one of the mouldy ones
thin skin with scar
not very deep purple
less juicy but quite sweet
sweeter than thick skin ones
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
result...
two are not much different in terms of taste and texture...
both are as soft as regular white dragon fruit...
similar mildly sweet taste...
juz that Malaysia ones likely to have a thinner skin...
Malaysia ones are all rounder in shapes...
these two points do not likely to affect the taste of the flesh...
however the maybe-diseased fruits from taiwan are a big reason that taiwan loses...
this time the winner is red dragon fruits from Malaysia!
comparing to the white dragon fruits, these red ones may be a bit sweeter...
other than that juz nothing special...
btw it gives a pink urine... maybe all those phytonutrients from the red pigments juz comes out without any effects...
overall I don't feel like will be trying them again...
